The most beloved leaders in history gained recognition and authority by means of a relational model.
Some of the most hated leaders in time gained their power through manipulation and tyranny of the masses.
Both came to power, but through different means, the outcomes being dramatically different.
I find no other model more true and efficient in the celebration and promotion of creative work then the person to person/ relational model. It gives an amazingly potent voice and kinetic energy to work that is made on a grass roots level as well as maintaining a healthy reciprocal relationship between the artist and their audience.
In the present day culture, I find Im continually bombarded by the idea of appealing and marketing to a mass amount of people at all times (this view runs rampant as the black plague in the music industry) in order to be successful. Albeit, Im not an elitist who wouldnt be content to see my artwork gain the publics' popular vote, but yet there is something even more powerful and moving, a sense of eternity perhaps, in your everyday interactions brought on by some sort of art form experience. Whether you gather together under movie interests, music taste, or the love of creating, person to person relationships are truly the beginning and end of honest art form.
All this flowery language and what Im really trying to say is: As an artist, I believe it most beneficial to invest 10% of my time and energy into marketing my work to a mass amount of people and 90% to promoting myself to one person, one relationship at a time. ----If your work's good, it will gain ground on its own soon enough.
