Aaaaaaand...

While I was finishing the night landscapes, i figured I might as well finish this one too.

It has been sitting in storage for the past couple of years, and I've been meaning to get to it, but never made the time.

The idea comes from a series of pictures my son Lucian took of himself on our computer.  We were watching a lot of Miyazaki  films at the time.....It is a screen painting as well.

And now it's hanging in our room!:)

Abstract screen

Based on a blurry photo of a country road at dusk, this piece was more of an experiment of the limitations of the screen vs. oil paints vs. spray paint vs. wood.
Its kind of industrial looking, but worth the exploration...

new screen paintings of Montana landscapes....

For those of you who don't know, Ive been experimenting with the process of making paintings with a screen suspended inches from the canvas. I was hoping for an ethereal, supernatural, even holographic effect (which, by the way, is really, really hard to document with photographs).

It seems to be working best with the portraits I've done.....here I tried some landscapes with the same technique...not sure if its conducive to the process.....

new screen painting of Lucian.....

I just finished this one and have one more to go in the series....I think I might try suspending the screen from the canvas in a different way..........

Lucian means bringer of light.

Just finished the first painting of Lu. This time I angled the frame slightly to assist the screen in it's optical illusionary abilities...

... these screen paintings are difficult to photograph, but you get the idea.

Anyways, it is hanging along with another screen portrait in the Lovejoy Bakery (http://www.lovejoybakers.com) in the Pearl District if you'd like to see it (thanks Marc and Tracy).

Also, it could be considered borderline souless, but I am finishing a screen painting of the VISO logo, which I will promptly send to them in hopes of free product--- or possibly an offer to be their spokesperson.

As sellout as that is, it has prompted me to begin a series of screen paintings consisting of logos and fonts......the screen's optical 3D effect seems to be a good match with flat plains and colors.

A fringe benefit of painting this way (just in case you thought I was aging "Benjamin Buttons" style when viewing the previous picture), is that it really is a paint by numbers game, which makes it easy for my kids to paint along with me.

screen painting

Here is another screen painting...its ok. The subject looks to dreary and sick and the canvas is absorbing too much paint (even spray paint). Im having trouble flattening plains and creating solid spaces and colors.

I think that Im going to switch to painting on wood instead of canvas and I have some ideas on how to give this technique a fuller, more communal voice....
